About Us

SOS SIUE is the Student Organization of Sustainability at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. It is a club run by students that severs to educate the campus and community about environmental issues and instruct them on ways to help and become more sustainable. SOS also tries to make the campus itself more sustainable.

Many people may not know what it means to be sustainable. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as:

1. capable of being sustained

2. a. of, relating to, or being a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged

b. of or relating to a lifestyle involving the use of sustainable methods

Sustainability has also been popularly defined as meeting the needs of the present without impairing the ability of future generations to meet those same needs.

So basically, sustainability is the practice of giving support, relief, nourishment, and prolongation. This can be in agriculture, natural resources, human health, or even society. Our organization simply wants to inform others on environmental issues and advances so that we can work together to sustain our planet and life.
